What if I told you there is a way for you to get paid $10 for every video that you make, which usually goes on for about 20 minutes? And that all you need is being able to speak English and speak out your thoughts out loud.
Sounds too good to be true? Well, it is true, but of course there are some things you should know before you decide to give it a shot.
We will go over everything you need to know to jump on this opportunity and start getting some extra funds on the side!
The opportunity we’re talking about is UserTesting.
What do you do to get the $10?
Simple! Let me give you an example of a recent video one of our team members had to do. We had to record our screen (internet browser) and voice (that’s right, no camera needed) and complete a series of tasks on a given website. In this case, the person had to go on a website of a museum and do things like:
- Find the museum floor map
- Find when the museum closes
That’s it! While you do it, you have to keep sharing your thoughts, i.e. where do you look first, where do you expect to find this information etc. Why?
This gives valuable insight to website designers to make sure their site is easy to use by people like me and you. It also helps others… Imagine you were trying to go the museum and you can’t find this one key information that you’re looking for! Once the site is user-tested, the key information should be easily available with just a few clicks.
How to get accepted?
The key is to speak freely and share your thoughts! Noone wants to look at a silent video of you clicking around and wondering why did you click the way you clicked? Over-communicate. For example, I’d explain I first look for this information at the top of the page. I cannot find it, so I would scroll to the bottom to see if it’s there. I click here because X reason and I expect Y.
Doing this will get you accepted in no time!
Advantages
The “work” is actually a lot of fun. Noone will punish you for not completing a task – it’s a great lesson to the designers! You can complete it on your own time without going anywhere, simply start up a recording software (provided for you) and you’re good to go. The pay is great as well and it’s being paid FAST. A lot faster than other companies, and straight to your paypal.
Disadvantages
There are two main disadvantages here. First one, some tasks are very competitive and go quick! You really need to be on top of your mailbox to spot these quickly and sign up. It may happen that you miss some cool opportunities because someone else grabbed it first.
Second one is the work availability. You might get lucky and get a few jobs a week, but sometimes you may find that the offers are not coming through OR that you are not in the particular demographic of the test and you have to wait for an offer suited to your profile (e.g. men will not be asked to review an online shop selling women’s shoes…).
Nonetheless, this is a great way to earn some extra cash while having fun!
